More than Three Conditional Formats in Excel

You can use as many conditional formats as you want in Excel, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, each conditional format takes up a certain amount of processing power, so if you have too many, it can slow down your spreadsheet. Second, each conditional format is applied to the entire cell range that you select, so if you have a lot of data, it can take a while for the formats to be applied. Third, when you apply multiple conditional formats to the same cell range, they are applied in the order that you specify them.

To apply multiple conditional formats to a cell range:

  1. Select the cell range that you want to format.
  2. On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click Conditional Formatting.
  3. Click New Rule.
  4. In the Select a Rule Type list, click Use a formula to determine which cells to format.
  5. In the Format values where this formula is true box, enter a formula that uses relative references.
  6. For example, if you want to apply conditional formatting to cells in column A based on whether the value in column B is greater than 10, you would enter this formula:

  1. Click Format.

  1. If you want to use more than one condition, click Conditional Formatting again, and then click New Rule.

    1. In the Edit the Rule Description list, click Format only cells that contain.
