Causal launched 2 years ago with a vision to become the de-facto number-crunching tool for modern teams.
There are a lot of pieces to this, and we started by focusing on the 'builder' experience — letting you pull in historical data (from accounting systems, CRMs, data warehouses, etc.), build custom models and metrics layered with scenarios and versions, and share live reports with beautiful charts and tables.
Hundreds of companies now rely on Causal for business planning and reporting. ClassDojo (200 employees) eliminated the need for a finance FTE by running all financial planning and forecasting in Causal. Branch Insurance (420 employees) improved their forecast accuracy by 70%, and Prefect’s (85 employees) are now planning with 2x the accuracy in 1/3 the time.
With the 'builder' experience in a good place, we've spent the last few months focusing on removing friction and driving collaboration between teams with a radically improved 'stakeholder experience': Causal 2.0.
Causal 2.0 is the single platform for financial modellers, budget owners, and executives to plan accurately, share insights, and make better decisions, together.
What's Causal 2.0?
Four core features are part of today’s launch:
Enhanced commenting
With our new commenting capabilities, you and your end-users (budget owners + department heads) can tag each other in individual cells and dashboards as you ask questions, provide feedback and share answers.
This encourages closer collaboration directly in Causal — no need to send slacks or emails to reach your team. Collaborate directly in Causal to get to the answers more quickly.

Approval Workflows
When in planning cycles, getting input from your team on the assumptions you’re making is critical.
With our approval workflows, users can easily digest relevant data using interactive charts and tables, enter their targets, and submit those targets back to the model admin.
Those edits then flow directly to the model admin to then review & approve/reject the submission. Only when a value is approved does it get integrated into the model.
This gives the model admin the comfort of control, knowing that only approved changes can be incorporated into the model.

Audit Logs
With audit logs, users can track real-time changes made in a model or dashboard, including data refreshes, formula changes, and visual updates.
With user-level detail and wrapped in an easy-to-read digest on the top-right of the screen, power users now have a depth of oversight and the comfort of control as they share reports and models across teams and departments.

Multi-Player Modeling
Causal power users must work in the same model simultaneously to hit a tight deadline or decide together in real-time. You can now accomplish this in Causal. This is the first step to replicating the seamless multi-player modelling of G-Sheets.
With user-level detail and wrapped in an easy-to-read digest on the top-right of the screen, power users now have a depth of oversight and the comfort of control as they share reports and models across teams and departments.
While Causal 2.0’s release marks a distinct shift in how our customers work in Causal, today’s announcement is only the beginning of what’s to come.
Over the coming months, our product and engineering team will ship new features to help us achieve effortless collaboration, company-wide.
