Locking Worksheet Names in Excel

When you lock a worksheet name in Excel, it means that you cannot change the name of the worksheet. This can be useful if you want to make sure that no one accidentally changes the name of a worksheet. To lock a worksheet name, follow these steps:

  1. Open the workbook that contains the worksheet you want to lock.
  2. Click the worksheet tab for the worksheet you want to lock.
  3. Right-click the sheet tab, and then click Tab Color on the shortcut menu.
  4. Click More Colors.
  5. In the Colors dialog box, click Custom, and then click in the Color box to select a color.
  6. Click OK twice.

The selected color appears on the tab of the locked sheet. If someone tries to change the name of a locked sheet, they will receive an error message telling them that the sheet is protected.
