How to Use VLOOKUP to Access Information to the Left in Excel

The VLOOKUP function in Excel can be used to access information to the left, as well as to the right. To do this, simply use a negative number for the col_index_num argument.

For example, say you have a list of data in columns A and B, and you want to lookup data in column A based on a value in column B. You could use the following formula:

=VLOOKUP(B1,A:B,-1)

This would return the value in column A that is in the same row as the value in B1.
