Deleting Duplicate Text Values in Excel

If you have a list of data in Excel that contains duplicates, you can use the Remove Duplicates feature to delete the duplicate values and keep only the unique values. To remove duplicates:

  1. Select the range of cells that contains the duplicates.
  2. On the Data tab, in the Data Tools group, click Remove Duplicates.
    • Note: If your data has headers, be sure to select the My data has headers check box.
  3. In the Remove Duplicates dialog box, do one or both of the following:

    •       To delete duplicate rows and keep only unique rows, select all columns.

    •       To delete duplicate rows and keep only unique rows based on certain columns, select only those columns.

  4. Click (OK). The duplicate values are deleted from the selected cells, and only the unique values are retained.
