Counting Asterisks in Excel

To count the number of asterisks in a cell, you can use the LEN function. For example, if cell A1 contains "*", the formula =LEN(A1) returns 1. If cell A1 is empty, the formula returns 0.

To count the number of asterisks in a range of cells, you can use the COUNTIF function. For example, if cells A1:A5 contain "*", the formula =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"*") returns 5.

To count the number of asterisks in a worksheet, you can use the COUNTIF function with the wildcard character (\*) as the criterion. For example, if cells A1:A5 on Sheet1 contain "*", and cells B1:B5 on Sheet2 are empty, the formula =COUNTIF(Sheet1!A:A,"*")+COUNTIF(Sheet2!B:B,"*") returns 5.
