Stopping Fractions from Reducing in Excel

When you type a fraction into a cell in Microsoft Excel, the program automatically reduces the fraction to its lowest terms. For example, if you type the fraction 16/64, it will automatically change to 1/4. This is usually what you want, but there are times when you don't want the fraction reduced. To keep a fraction from reducing, follow these steps:

  1. Click the cell where you want to enter the non-reducing fraction.
  2. Type the numerator of the fraction.
  3. Press and hold down the Alt key on your keyboard.
  4. While holding down the Alt key, type 0179. This will insert a superscripted division symbol into your cell ().
  5. Release the Alt key.
