Moving Subtotals in Excel

There are a few different ways to move subtotals in Excel. One way is to use the PivotTable function. This will allow you to select which columns you want to subtotal, and then you can move the subtotals to any location within the spreadsheet. Another way to move subtotals is to use the Subtotal function. This function will also allow you to select which columns you want to subtotal, but it will not allow you to move the subtotals to a different location. The last way to move subtotals is to use the Outline function. This function will create an outline of your data, and you can then expand or collapse the outline as needed. You can also use the Outline function to create subtotals, but it will not allow you to move them.

If you want to move subtotals using the PivotTable function, follow these steps:

  1. Open your spreadsheet in Excel.
  2. Click on the Data tab.
  3. Click on the PivotTable button.
  4. Select which range of cells you want to use for your PivotTable.
  5. Click on the Insert tab.
  6. Click on the PivotTable button.

  7. A new sheet will be created with your PivotTable.


    7. In the PivotTable Fields pane, drag the fields that you want to subtotal into the "Values". For this example, we'll drag the "Sales" field into "Values".


    8. Click on the drop-down arrow next to "Sales" in the "Values" section.
    9. Click on "Value Field Settings".
    10. In the "Show Values As" drop-down menu, select "Running Total In".
    11. In the "Base Field" drop-down menu, select the field that you want your running total based on.
    For this example, we'll select "Region".
    12. Click on "OK".
    Your PivotTable should now look something like this:

    13. To move your subtotals, click on any cell in your PivotTable.
    14. On the "Design", click on the "Subtotals". A drop-down menu will appear.
    15. Click on ""Move Subtotals To Beginning Of Groups". Your PivotTable should now look like this:
