Loading Unwanted Files at Startup in Excel

If you're seeing unwanted files loading at startup in Excel, there are a few things you can do to fix the issue.

First, try opening Excel in Safe Mode

One way to fix this issue is to try opening Excel in Safe Mode. To do this, hold down the Ctrl key while you double-click the Excel shortcut. You may see a message that says "Safe Mode" in the title bar. If so, click Enable Macros. Once you've done this, try opening the file or files that were loading at startup.

If that doesn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling Office

If opening Excel in Safe Mode doesn't work, your next step should be to uninstall and reinstall Office. This will remove any corrupt or damaged files that may be causing the issue. Once you've uninstalled Office, you can download and install it again. Be sure to select the same version of Office that you had installed before (e.g., 32-bit or 64-bit).

Still seeing unwanted files loading at startup? Try these troubleshooting steps

If you're still seeing unwanted files loading at startup after trying the above steps, there are a few other things you can try:

  • Check your antivirus software: Make sure your antivirus software is up to date and run a scan of your computer. Some types of malware can cause unwanted files to load at startup.
  • Check for updates: Check for updates for Windows and for Office. Sometimes installing the latest updates can fix issues like this.
  • Reset Office Registry settings: Reset registry settings (and file associations) for Office programs.
